We should have read the signs that today wasn’t going to be our day when we had call off’s during the week and this morning; boots left at home; the wrong shirt brought and an ankle knock yesterday. What followed was probably our worst display of the season, with us being off the pace and losing our battles in every part of the pitch.
We paid the price for starting slowly, letting Sauchie dominate possession and they were soon 2-0 ahead. The first was a 25 yard rocket, but we shouldn’t have given them the space and time to get their shot away, and the second was another defensive error. Gregor managed to pull a goal back before half-time. He ran onto a long ball from Ollie, had his first shot saved, but managed to bundle in the rebound. 2-1 down at half-time flattered us, but we were still in the game.
The second half was the same story of defensive errors costing us and Sauchie being more committed to winning the game. At 65 minutes and 2-1 down we were still in the game, but once we conceded the third goal our heads seemed to drop and it was soon 5-1.
So all in all a day to forget, but hopefully we won’t forget the lessons we learned today…when we’re not playing well we need to work even harder to close the opposition down all over the pitch and we need to work on being sharper and stronger to take our chances. The only saving grace is that getting to the cup semifinals is still in our own hands, a win next week books our place… time to reset, refocus and go again!
